Jo Pendered is a portrait and figurative artist working mainly in oils. When not fulfilling commissioned portraits she likes painting the human form.

Most of her working life was spent supporting her children as a professional photographer. In 2010 she won a British Institute of Professional Photographers award for promising newcomer in children’s photography.

Like many, the pandemic enabled Jo to revisit painting for the first time since leaving college. Without the constraints of time and demands of paying customers she began to record what was available to her – her own environment, family and friends – and what interested her- the human form, light and shade and the colours within. Jo’s work is very personal and sometimes quite intimate in that it portrays the players in her own life, past and present, and her immediate environment.

Jo has had paintings exhibited in several joint exhibitions in France, and regularly undertakes private portrait commissions.

Commissions

It is both a privilege and a responsibility to paint a portrait and be paid for doing so. Several of the paintings on this site are commissioned pieces. I want to be clear about the costs and variables involved so that you can decide whether this is a project in which you want to invest.

Important in the process is the relationship between us both, as this will have an impact on the 'feel' of the finished piece. I prefer to work from life, rather than photographs. In this time not only do I make sketches and take multiple reference photographs myself, but I like to get to know the person. A sitting, with several breaks, takes between 2 to 3 hours. The location is agreed at the outset. My studio is in our chambres d'hotes in the Tarn region of France (www.lemoulindalos.com). A sitting could coincide with visit to this beautiful region and is a great way in which to get to know you.

It is possible to create a portrait purely from photographs. However, much depends on the quality of the images and additional photos might be required. The commission price is agreed once the reference material has been provided.

Pricing is based on several different factors. Size, number of sitters, level of detail as well as the location of the sit, all have an impact on the final cost. Prices start at 400 euros for a head and shoulders portrait painted in oil on a canvas sized 30x30cms. With a plain background and just one sitter this would be a simple head and shoulders composition.

A much larger canvas of 100x100cms depicting a family group with a detailed background would, understandably, be a higher fee of 2,400 euros. Paintings of this size have a lot of impact.

The reality is that most people commission smaller sized pieces, not only because of the expense but because it sits comfortably on a wall in most modern homes. As an example a 70x50cms sized canvas of a single sitter costs 1265 euros. This size is more easy to display in a home.

A non-refundable deposit of 50% of the agreed fee is payable to start the portrait, with the balance paid when the portrait is finished. If you are not happy with the result, there is no commitment on your part to take the canvas home having made the final payment. It will be repurposed.
